What is my number plate worth?
This is the question which sits along side the meaning of life. There is a simple answer and this is 'what somebody is prepared to pay for it' The concept of Everyplate.com was born from one of the partners registering with a car number plate dealer to see how much could he get for his plate. Out of interest the other partner made contact and was given a price. The first partner was contacted with an offer which was only 60% of the sale price. We thought that this was unfair and we wanted to build a consumer driven business. The values that the business were built upon included total transparency, the buyer and seller setting the price, a secure environment and a no cost opportunity for people with private number plates to test the water. There are a number of people who would not want to sell their plates but very few who would refuse the right offer.
This gives you no help in establishing a value but explains how the concept was born. There is no clear science to a valuation but there are a number of methods to establish a value.
- Established Number Plate Dealers; search the site of established dealers for similar plates. As explained above this amount is not what you would receive. You could offer it for less on Everyplate which would increase the chance of a sale and still get more money back.
- The DVLA Website; they have a great web site for plates that are unregistered. Most of the dealer web sites have a copy of the DVLA database with around 30 million registrations on. They then buy it from the DVLA, add their profit on and sell it to you. We do not do that as our aim is for 'every plate' already issued.
- The DVLA Auctions; within the web site they have the prices of what the previous sale price from their auctions. This is a more realistic value for your number plate. Some dealers and individuals buy direct at these auctions and sell at an inflated price to people like us.
- What you want for it; the beauty of Everyplate is that it costs nothing to advertise your plate.
Even if you do not really feel like selling, it costs nothing to price it at that important figures for you and have a go. You never know, you could get that offer.
